What it means

Error 1117 / 0x8007045d "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error" means Windows could not complete a read or write on a storage device. It appears when copying files, initializing or formatting a disk, installing Windows or applying updates. The drive, its cable, port or controller did not respond correctly.

Applies to: Windows 10, Windows 11

How to fix ERROR_IO_DEVICE

  1. Reconnect the device on another port or cable; avoid unpowered USB hubs and front-panel ports
  2. Scan the drive for file system errors with chkdsk X: /f in Terminal (Admin), replacing X with the drive letter
  3. Update or reinstall the storage driver in Device Manager under Disk drives or Storage controllers
  4. Check disk health with wmic diskdrive get status or the manufacturer's diagnostic tool
  5. Download the update or file again to a different drive to see if the error follows the device
  6. If the disk is failing, copy important data off immediately and replace it

Why it happens

Loose or damaged cables, insufficient USB power, bad sectors on a failing hard drive or flash media, outdated controller drivers, and SATA mode changes in firmware are the common causes. The operating system receives an error from the hardware layer instead of data.
