What it means

Error 23 / 0x80070017 "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)" appears when data read from a disk, optical disc or USB stick fails its integrity check. Users see it while copying files, initializing a drive in Disk Management, or installing Windows or a game. The data that came back does not match what was written.

Applies to: Windows 10, Windows 11

How to fix ERROR_CRC

  1. Try copying again from a different port or cable; for discs, clean the disc and use another drive
  2. Run chkdsk X: /r in Terminal (Admin) to locate bad sectors and recover readable data (this can take hours)
  3. If installing from media, re-download the installer or ISO and create new media
  4. Check drive health with wmic diskdrive get status or the manufacturer's diagnostic tool
  5. Copy important files off the drive as soon as possible and replace it if errors continue
  6. If the disk shows as not initialized with a CRC error, stop writing to it and consider professional recovery for critical data

Why it happens

Physical damage, bad sectors, worn flash memory, scratched discs, or faulty cables corrupt reads. Since the checksum fails, Windows refuses to deliver possibly wrong data.

FAQ

Can chkdsk fix a cyclic redundancy check error?

It can mark bad sectors and recover some data, but it cannot repair physical damage.

Does a CRC error mean the drive is dead?

Not always, but it is a warning. Back up immediately.
